Story
Cheenu (Vimal) dreams of resurrecting his ancestral restaurant Masala Cafe to its former glory, but, when he leaves the town to stop the marriage between his lover, Madhavi, (Anjali) and her uncle Vettupuli (Santhanam), his brother Raghu (Shiva), a petty thief and a compulsive gambler, loses the place to a cunning cop, Dharmaraj (John Vijay), who has made a deal with a developer. Meanwhile, Manickam (Subbu), a jeweller, is after Rs 10 crore worth of diamonds that he has managed to hide from customs officials. What happens when all these plotlines meet?

If you want the answer to that question straight away, here it is — riotous fun that will have you laughing out loud every now and then. Yes, Kalakalappu marks a return to form for Sundar C, whose directorial efforts (barring Anbe Sivam) have been patchy, this side of the millennium. Comedy is Sundar's forte and he has managed to come up with a compelling script that offers the maximum scope for him to excel in this aspect. As he did with Ullathai Allitha (his best-known work till date), the director creates a bunch of quirky characters and puts them in desperate situations that might lack logic but are full on the fun quotient.

Consider the film's best comedy set piece — a chase involving three vans through the alleys of a village. Madhavi is kidnapped by Vettupuli's rival (a characteristically-comic cameo by Mano Bala), who wants him to marry his daughter. On the other hand, Cheenu holds Vettupuli's grandpa hostage and plans to elope with Madhavi. The manner in which each of these three characters misinterprets the other's intentions and start chasing one another defies logic but Sundar executes this segment superbly that you are left rolling with laughter throughout the entire sequence.

One of the crucial elements in comedy is casting and Sundar gets it right here. Vimal is ideal as the straight arrow Cheenu, but it is Shiva, as the not-so-righteous Raghu, who is the scene stealer. In fact, it is he who carries the first half with his quips that range from laugh-out-loud one-liners to silly 'mokkais'. And, even though the character of Vettupuli has shades of Vadivelu's Kaipulla from Sundar's own Winner (especially with respect to him pretending as the local tough guy), Santhanam manages to make the role his own, despite it being slightly under-written. John Vijay and Subbu are just perfect as the antagonists. As for the heroines, they are chiefly around as window dressing; or, you could call it undressing, for there is quite a bit of skin show in the songs, which certainly comes as a surprise considering that we have seen both Anjali and Oviya in homely roles so far.

On the downside, though Vijay Ebenezer's songs are catchy enough, they definitely slow down and protract the film. And in the climax, Sundar gets a bit indulgent and goes on adding gag after gag that despite being funny tire you out a bit. But, on the whole, Kalakalappu remains true to its title and is jolly good fun throughout.

Avni Cinemax's Kalakalappu (earlier titled Masala Café), his 25th film as a director, comes with a battalion of well-known names, but whether it actually satisfies the tag of a rollicking comedy is doubtful.

The pity of it is that it actually does have a meaningful storyline under all the slapstick mess: Seenu (Vimal), struggles with his ancestral hotel, Masala Café in Kumbakonam, once a famed enterprise but now a dilapidated wreck, cared for by an old chef and his grand-daughter, Maya (Oviy

he three are perpetually short of funds. Seenu, deep in debt, battles Anjuvatti Azhagesan (Ilavarasu), when fate throws more bad luck at him in the form of the pretty Madhavi (Anjali), who lands him in even more trouble.

As if that were not enough, his brother Raghu (Shiva), the perpetual wise-cracker, arrives on the scene after a term in jail, and matters seem poised for a crackling comical enterprise.

Raghu does deliver a few one-liners and there are several gags that drag out a few laughs, but unfortunately, that seems to be it.

The story meanders from serious to silly every couple of scenes, as though the director couldn't make up his mind which way to go. A pity as it starts out well enough. In the midst of all this is a parallel track with missing diamonds, after which Vettupuli (Santhanam) arrives suddenly, as Madhavi's groom-to-be.

It's almost as though director Sundar C sat down with several promising gags and simply built his story around them. Which wouldn't have been a bad idea, for he had the cast to pull it off.

Unfortunately, there's no clear direction, and the jokes don't come every moment either, with the result that everything ends in a Crazy Mohan-esque melee that's funny in the beginning, and then rapidly loses steam.

Vimal plays a meek man who can't lie to save his life, while Shiva earns some applause with his trademark deadpan delivery. Neither of the two heroines have much to do, as befitting ladies in any mainstream movie, and in this one, they've gone right back to the skin shows of yore.

Santhanam is his usual funny self, while Ilavarasu and Subbu work with what they have.

Vijay Ebenezer's tunes, though interesting, seem out of place in a movie such as this. U K Senthil's cinematography works well, and the SFX team has had its share of gimmicks too.

Kalakalappu does have its funny moments, but only a few of them work. It doesn't look like Sundar C has capitalised on his cast, or his plot – both of which seem to have had potential.

Kalakalappu is a 2012 comedy film directed by Sundar C and produced by his wife Kushboo Sundar. It stars Vimal, Shiva, Anjali and Oviya. Music composer is Vijay Ebenezer (Kanden fame). P. Vijay penned the lyrics for all songs. Kalakalappu is Sundar's 25th movie in his film career as director. The film was originally titled Masala Cafe, but was later renamed to Kalakalappu. It is said to be inspired from the German film Soul Kitchen. The famous CKS bungalow in Gobichettipalayam was converted into Masala Cafe for the film.[3] The film released on 11 May 2012 from positive to mixed reviews from critics, however it opened well at the box office.
